Air New Zealand Fashion Week Opening Night Through The Eyes of Chloe Bartlett

Fashion Week isn’t all about fashion shows and cat walks for some people it can be an experience that you remember for a lifetime. This was the case for New Zealand’s up and coming singer/song writer Chloe Bartlett. Chloe Bartlett came to our attention earlier in the year and from the moment we, here at the NZFW office heard about her we knew that she had to play at the Air New Zealand Fashion Week Opening Party. Below is Chloe’s account of the event;

“I’ve decided there must be a time when every musician stands back and wonders how their music left entertaining their bedroom walls and ended up some place completely unexpected. For me, that happened this year at Air New Zealand Fashion Week. I’ve been writing/performing music for some time now, playing gigs on cigarette-butt strewn pavements through to guitar shredding/boys-with-long-hair band competitions, but ANFW undoubtedly has been the best event I’ve been apart of to date.

Like all opening night’s, you are intoxicated by the hype and can taste the excitement, the Moet & Chandon was flowing and my band of local boys; Steve Harvie, Nathan Collings and Jarrod Bayly couldn’t help but feel slightly overwhelmed by flashing lights and the All Blacks (I think I was definitely more excited about the All Blacks, but I cannot be sure). Fashion Week has been an absolute highlight in my musical career to date, and I have been pinching myself for months to remind myself that it did actually happen.

So where too now after such a mountain top experience? Well towards the end of this year I am playing a few local gigs with up and coming artists around Auckland city, I also have a summer residency at Stony Ridge vineyard and am playing Parachute Music Festival 2010.

Smashbox at Air New Zealand Fashion Week 2009

This year Smashbox took on Air New Zealand Fashion Week 09 with five shows.Debuting at NOM*D’s show, reinforcing the labels dark and brooding reputation, the Smashbox team created a flawless foundation, teamed with well groomed brows and a brown glossed eye, some clean and soft, others with a random smear of color in the eye area, taking the meaning of wolf to a new level.

For the two GHD New Generation Group shows and a line-up of twelve designers, two new looks were revealed. First, a bold, daring look using both sooty and shimmery shadows, creating a metallic smoky eye with hero product “Smashbox Jet Set Water Proof Eyeliner” applied to water line of eye making the white of the eye sparkle and warm peach blush for perfectly contoured cheeks.

The second look, barely there nude used the new Reign Collection “Monarch” eye palette of soft and shimmering gold’s. Key to the look was liquid liner and false eye lashes to accentuate the eye.

The other key favourite look was with hip fashion label “Stitch Ministry.” The team worked with designer Kylee Davis to come up with a sexy take on the smouldery eye with a variety of red, denim blue or Smokey grey shadows applied heavily in the lid finishing with a black liner across lash line, balanced with a natural and lightly glossed lip.

The Quadrant in Metro Sept 09

Here are a few snippets of what hot hotel The Quadrant were up to during Fashion week. Adrian Hailwood has designed the new uniforms – which were featured in the Sunday Star Times on 27th September.

They were also featured in Metro magazine in September as one of the hotels to stay at. I can see why – the Penthouse looks amazing. Check it out here .

The Quadrant had fantastic specials for Fashion Week and Weekend attendees. They also have many other great tie-ins with Auckland events.

Rationale: 21st Century make up at last!!

Time was, makeup killed you. From the C16th to the C18th, white lead was used to whiten the complexion which would have been fine except that lead’s a toxin. The make up ate into the skin and sometimes killed the wearer.
Through the C19th and C20th there was a huge improvement. Makeup wasn’t lethal anymore. It was just harmless. It made you look nicer but if you think about it, that makes no sense. Why wear something for maybe 16 hours a day if it isn’t going to actually work for you?
I hadn’t thought of that before but one of the show stands at Air New Zealand Fashion Week this year was “Rationale”.
It’s a new make up to come out of Australia and using it, if you will excuse me, is one of the most rational beauty decisions you can make.
Here’s why:
The buzz word now is not cosmetics but cosmeceuticals and Rationale is all about cosmeceuticals. These are cosmetic beauty products that leave you more beautiful when you wipe them off than when you put them on, and first up is mascara.
The Rationale mascara lengthens and thickens your lashes. It was devised in Australia and has been huge since it was released onto the market in March this year because it’s not like other lash lengthening mascaras which use micro fibres to add length and bulk. The Rationale mascara works on your actual lashes, and you can expect a growth of 2mm over a few months, ie with the use of one wand. Once you stop using it, your eyelashes go back to their usual thickness and length. (But why would you stop?)
The active ingredient is something called oligo-peptide and its also available in a product available in the US called Latisse, which grows your eyelashes too. The problem with that though, is that it can make your blue or green eyes, brown, and you don’t want that!
The whole point of Rationale is that there’s no downside at all.

Then there’s the lipgloss. Its active ingredient is hyaluronic acid which plumps the skin by attracting moisture. You have to reapply it every 2 -3 hours and the effect isn’t permanent but it still sure beats a plain slash of lippy!
The real star of the range though is boring old zinc sunscreen.
Primitive people must have looked at rocks of white zinc and thought it would look great ground to a powder and daubed on their skin. They then would have seen that the skin covered by zinc stayed pale in the sun and hey presto, the only total sunscreen known, was born. The problem with it though, was that zinc was so very thick and heavy on the skin that it was useless in make up. Until now.
Rationale has formulated nano (ie micro-tiny) particles of zinc to go into make up and as it so happens, that’s the best way to get this important element into skin. The other great benefit is that because zinc is essentially opaque it still forms a film over the skin but in Rationale make up it is so fine that the film gives your skin a very fine gauze like shield so you look flawless but unmade up.

Everywhere, nowadays, the thrust of makeup is to protect during the day and repair at night, but with the addition of another ingredient, niacimide, which reduces uneven pigmentation, as well as protecting against cancer, Rationale repairs during the day as well, with the goal of perfecting your skin rather than covering or concealing it.
The only downside of Rationale is that it is so effective that it cannot be sold through chemists. Because your use of it must be guided and monitored you can only get it from The Skin Institute, either on line skininstitute.co.nz/shop/Rationale+products/Niacinamide+Serum.html or from The Skin Institute in person. Either way, your use of it will be supervised.

Chinese celebrity Denise Keller and her bf Bobby Chin bought up large while they were here, I am starting it this week and Pieter has already started and is looking ‘dewy”. By rights, she will be looking flawlessly poreless by Christmas!

Habitat for Humanity at ANZFW

Over 250 female designers, media celebrities like Mary Lambie, Greer Robson, Sara Tetro, Ruby Higgins and Carly Flynn, rolled up their sleeves, picked up paintbrushes and nail guns and partnered with Habitat for Humanity to fashion a real house in just 5 days this September in the Auckland Viaduct Harbor.

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand is a Christian not-for-profit organisation that works to house families in need and the wider goal is to eliminate substandard housing by building, renovating and selling simple, decent homes on an affordable basis.

Since inception in New Zealand in 1992, they’ve built more than 345 homes.

Habitat is not a ‘give-away’ programme. Each partner family invests at least 500 hours of their own labour, called ‘sweat equity’, into building their homes working together with volunteers from all parts of the community. This helps partner families to develop new skills, and instils a stronger pride of ownership.

Habitat assists families to transition from renting, to the Kiwi dream of home ownership. After a bond payment and initial trial rental period, the family has the opportunity to purchase the house through affordable repayments.

Regular payments from partner families are reinvested back into the programme through a revolving ‘Fund for Humanity’, allowing Habitat to build more homes for families.
